West Indies tour: Gambhir to lead ODI team; Badri makes the cut

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar were among the seniors who were rested as the national selectors on Friday recalled Tamil Nadu batsman S Badrinath and Bengal wicketkeeper Wriddhimaan Saha in India’s 16-member ODI squad for the tour of the West Indies.

Karnataka paceman Vinay Kumar also found a berth while Amit Mishra, Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma made a comeback to the team which will be captained by Gautam Gambhir. Young Suresh Raina was named his deputy.
Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla and the temperamental paceman S Sreesanth, both of whom featured in India’s World Cup-winning squad, were dropped from the team announced by BCCI secretary N Srinivasan after a meeting of the selection committee here.
The three seniors — Dhoni, Tendulkar nd paceman Zaheer Khan — who have been rested for the ODI series and the lone Twenty20 match, would be available for the Test series.
The series starts with the Twenty20 match on June 4 followed by the five one-dayers, starting June 6. The three Tests are scheduled from June 20.
“Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan have been rested. They will be available for the Test series,” Srinivasan said in a statement.
Opener Virender Sehwag was not considered for selection as he will undergo a shoulder surgery which will him rule him out for four to six weeks.
Paceman Ashish Nehra was also not considered as he is recovering from finger injury sustained during the World Cup.
Ambati Rayudu, who has been a prolific scorer in the ongoing IPL, failed to get the nod with the selectors preferring to go the more experienced Badrinath.

The newly-wed royals flew to Seychelles in a private jet on Monday and will be there for a 10-day romantic break and will shell out 4,000 pounds-a-night for the villa they are staying in, reports contactmusic.com.
A spokesman for St James’s Palace said: “We are not confirming and we are not commenting on speculation on where they may be going on their private honeymoon, we are just confirming that they have gone. The couple have asked that their privacy be respected during their honeymoon.”
The two got married on April 29 and an insider said: “After the glitter and excitement of their wedding and all the organisation it involved, they can’t wait to spend some quality time on their own.”
Britain’s Daily Mail has quoted another source as saying: “It’s one of the most incredible places you will ever visit and Catherine will have the time of her life. It’s everything you could want from a honeymoon destination and more – beautiful beaches, tropical seas and complete privacy.”

Osama bin Laden’s fifth wife has claimed that the killed al-Qaeda leader was not on kidney dialysis, but used to take Viagra during his stay in his Pakistani compound.
Insisting that bin Laden used to take the herbal impotence drug, Amal al-Sadeh, who was shot in the leg when SEALs burst into their bedroom and killed the terror leader, said: “He believed in his own medication.”
Osama Bin Laden wasn’t on kidney dialysis – but he did need a herbal impotence drug.
The New York Daily Newsquoted the Yemeni woman as saying that her husband had fully recovered from two kidney surgeries a decade ago, and that he needed no dialysis before his death, but cured himself with his own regimen, which included watermelons.
It was also reported that the Saudis had hired an assassin to poison Bin Laden in 1999, and the toxin gave him kidney failure.
In January 2002, then-Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf had also claimed that the terrorist leader had probably already died of kidney failure, and that he needed to travel with two dialysis machines.
Now however, evidence from the medicine cabinet in Bin Laden’s hideout has revealed that he was not that weak as he was expected to be.
“He was neither weak nor frail,” 29-year-old Sadeh said.
The medicines that were found in the compound reportedly included drugs to treat shingles, ulcers, nerve pain, high blood pressure, and Avena syrup, an extract of wild oats that is marketed as a natural “Viagra”.

Buddha's Birthday, the birthday of the Prince Siddhartha Gautama, is a holiday traditionally celebrated in 'Mahayana Buddhism'.
The celebration takes place on the eighth day of the fourth month in the Chinese lunar year. It's Buddha's 2555th birthday, which falls this year on May 10. In Japan, it is always celebrated on April 8, and is based on the Gregorian calendar.
In Korea the birthday of Buddha is celebrated according to the Lunisolar calendar. Lotus lanterns cover the entire temple throughout the month which are often flooded down the street.

Islamabad: The Pakistani military on Sunday again took control of the compound in the garrison city of Abbottabad where Osama bin Laden was killed by US forces, triggering rumours that the structure would be demolished so that it did not become a shrine for jihadists. There were unconfirmed reports of two blasts in Abbottabad but the source of the explosions was not immediately clear. Reporters who rushed to the spot said they were not being allowed by authorities to get close to the compound, which appeared to be intact. The journalists also quoted local residents as saying that they had not heard any blasts. The media was given limited access to the compound after it was handed over to police by the army a few days ago. However, soldiers were deployed around the compound today and reporters were barred from approaching it. TV news channels reported that security forces conducted a search operation in Abbottabad tonight for an alleged safe house that was used by the CIA to spy on bin Laden. The Washington Post had reported that the CIA maintained a safe house for a small team of spies who conducted extensive surveillance over a period of months on the compound where bin Laden was killed by US special forces on May 2. The security forces and members of a special anti-terror force conducted the search operation in several areas, including Bilal Town, where bin Laden's compound is located. Express 24/7 news channel reported that troops from the army's Engineering Corps searched the compound. There was no official confirmation of these reports. Pakistan bans live broadcast by foreign channels from Abbottabad Media reports have quoted unnamed Pakistani security officials as saying that they wanted bin Laden's compound to be demolished so that it did not become a shrine. Authorities have also imposed curbs on the international media reporting from Abbottabad.

Washington:  Terming the killing of Osama bin Laden as the most significant achievement against Al Qaeda, a top White House official on Sunday said the US is now looking for his deputy Ayman al Zawahiri, who is likely to be the new chief of the terror outfit.

"Al Zawahiri will be the next number one terrorist that we're looking for in the world. But we have a broad and global effort," the National Security Advisor Tom Donilon told CNN in an interview.

Donilon said the information gathered from the compound where bin Laden was living is that he was also engaging in a strategic and operational leadership as well, which makes the action last Sunday even more significant in his view.

"This was the most significant achievement against Al Qaeda and our nation's efforts against Al Qaeda over the last ten years. But we have to remain vigilant. And we are remaining vigilant. The amount of intelligence we got as a result of the raid, in addition to taking out bin Laden, is really extraordinary," he said.

Navy SEALs on Monday raided bin Laden's walled compound in Abbottabad in Pakistan and killed him. Donilon said the US forces basically went to Al Qaeda's commander's headquarters in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

"They entered the compound and were fired upon. They had to breach several walls and doors to get to where Osama bin Laden was. At no point during the course of this operation did Osama bin Laden indicate that he was prepared to surrender," he said.

The messages that have come back to the United States from around the world, is that this was a just action, that in fact this was a just action against a man who had committed murder, not just in the United States but around the world, he said.

"The other message that's come back has been interesting, from a strategic point of view, a step back, is a message of United States carrying out here over the course of two administrations, a persistent, deliberate and dedicated effort to achieve its goals. The message is that the United States will carry out and execute now what it says it's going to do, and it has the capability to do so," Donilon said.
