Prince William looked dashing in a red tunic with a blue sash, the uniform of an Irish Guards colonel – his most senior honorary appointment. The bride looked enchanting in a long Chantilly lace-sleeved gown with a train and a tiara borrowed from her grandmother-in-law Queen Elizabeth.
The lofty Westminster Abbey, which has seen history unfold over the centuries, reverberated to the sound of hymns. This was also the place of the funeral service of William’s mother Diana, Princess of Wales, on Sep 6, 1997. It has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the final resting place of 17 monarchs.
The Archbishop of Canterbury conducted the solemn wedding ceremony, a grand affair with 1,900 guests, including some 50 foreign heads of state.

Gambhir’s KKR beat Sehwag’s DD by 17 runs

New Delhi: It turned out to be a sweet ‘homecoming’ for Gautam Gambhir as Kolkata Knight Riders comprehensively beat Delhi Daredevils by 17 runs to notch up their fourth win in the Indian Premier League here today.

Put into bat, Manoj Tiwary’s gutsy half century helped KKR post a modest 148 for seven and then their bowlers got the dangerous Virender Sehwag and David Warner within the first seven overs to restrict the home to 131 for nine.
The win took KKR to eight points while Delhi stay put on four following their fifth loss and their road to recovery from here looks pretty bleak.
Not only it was satisfying for Gambhir to earn the bragging rights over best buddy Sehwag but it also brought the smile back in the face of Shah Rukh Khan who enjoyed his first victory in his hometown as he shook a leg with Cheer Girls to the tune of Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo Re.
The Daredevils this season are highly dependent on Virender Sehwag-David Warner combination. While Warner dragged one from Balaji that shaped in slightly onto his stumps, Sehwag (34, 23 balls, 5×4, 1×6) was in a punishing mood as he hit a flurry of boundaries in the first five overs.
It was young Jaidev Unadkat who got the dangerous Daredevils captain with a short ball that hurried onto him as he went for a pull and Balaji, who was standing at deep fine leg, didn’t make any mistake.
Sehwag’s dismissal literally put the brakes on scoring as all the KKR bowlers did a splendid job during the middle overs.
James Hopes (25, 30 balls) simply didn’t get going which led to additional pressure on other batsmen who perished going for big shots. Iqbal Abdulla was the pick of the KKR bowlers scalping three wickets for 25.

At Rs 20 cr, Aston Martin drives in

Time to reset eyeballs; Indians are shelling out big money for major supercars
At Rs 20 cr, Aston Martin drives in
Mumbai: Got Rs20 crore for a car?
FOR A CAR!
Somebody just bought one.

BOUGHT ONE!
It is time to reset eyeballs, folks.
Aston Martin, the marquee British car which is the vehicle of choice for one James Bond, set up a beachhead in Mumbai offering the costliest car ever in India. It's also an unusual car because only 77 of them will be produced. And 72 of those have already been bought across the globe.
With five to go, the Aston Martin One-77, which was launched at the Paris Motor Show in 2008, was put out for sale in Mumbai on Friday. Last year, saw the launch of Bugatti Veyron, the fastest car allowed on road with a top speed of 431 kmph, with a sticker price of Rs16 crore. Sources said 4-5 cars have already been booked by Indian customers, while one One-77 has been bought of the remaining 5. The super luxury car segment in India, experts said, is growing at 35-40% a year.
"We are entering India because we think the timing is right," said Bill Donnelly, director of sales at Aston Martin Lagonda Group.
"The Indian market for high-end sports cars is small, but growing very rapidly, and this is the first step for Aston Martin to get into this market," said Donnelly.

World's smelliest flower - India

24 april 2011

What's stinking? Oh the world's smelliest flower!

London: The Titan Arum plant, nicknamed the Corpse flower because of its pungent smell of rotting flesh, is in full bloom after 75 years at the University of Basel in Switzerland. The flower was expected to remain open until Easter Sunday.
What's stinking? Oh the world's smelliest flower!
The eight foot plant, indigenous to Indonesia's rainforests, has the largest unbranched shoot in the world. On average, they bloom once in a decade, according to the Daily Mail.
Titan Arum is coveted by collectors and plant enthusiasts around the world because of its strange blooming patterns.
Twelve of them are housed at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the Princess of Wales Conservatory among hundreds of other tropical plants, according to the Mail.
When the plants are ready to pollinate, the stem heats up to release a pungent smell, which lasts for about three days.
The largest Arum at Kew gardens weighs 200 pounds and grows at a staggering rate of a quarter of an inch an hour.
It guzzles liquid fertiliser and potassium each week to keep up its strength while bedded in roomy surroundings.
Sir David Attenborough, naturalist and a natural history film-maker, who invented the name Titan Arum, was the first to capture it flowering on film for his BBC TV series "The Private Life of Plants".
He dropped the plant's original name - Amorphophallus - perhaps because of the reference to male genitalia, the Mail said.

Perfect birthday gift for Sachin as Mumbai beat Hyderabad - India

Perfect birthday gift for Sachin as Mumbai beat Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Rohit Sharma and Andrew Symonds scripted a fantastic recovery with a record fifth wicket partnership to lay the foundation for Mumbai Indians' comfortably 37-run victory over Deccan Chargers in an IPL match.
Perfect birthday gift for Sachin as Mumbai beat Hyderabad
There couldn't have been a better birthday gift than a MI win for Sachin Tendulkar who turned 38. After posting a challenging total of 172 for four, MI restricted Chargers to 135 for eight as they now lead the points tally with 10 points from six outings.
Rohit (56 not out, 34 balls, 5x4, 3x6) and Symonds (44 not out, 33 balls, 4x4, 1x6) added 102 runs off only 65 balls for the unbroken fifth wicket after MI were tottering at 70 for four at the start of the 10th over. Incidentally, the duo played together for Chargers during the first three editions.
The duo thrashed Dale Steyn and Dan Christian for 16 and 24 runs respectively to score 40 off the last two overs.Christian went for 48 runs from his four wicketless overs. While chasing, the Chargers lost wickets at regular intervals. The MI bowlers led by Lankan slinger Lasith Malinga (4-0-9-3) kept the batsmen under wraps. The bowlers were also backed by some nice fielding that saw a couple home team batsmen being run-out.
Save skipper Kumar Sangakkara (34) who was cleaned up by a low fulltoss from Malinga, the other batsmen lacked application. Malinga also got his trademark yorker going that castled Shikhar Dhawan (25). Davy Jacobs (32, 20 balls, 5x4, 1x6) who was back in the squad opened with Tendulkar. It was Jacobs who started the initial onslaught as MI scored 47 runs in the first five overs before he was caught by Pragyan Ojha off Ishant Sharma's bowling.
All eyes were on birthday boy Tendulkar who turned 38 today. Tendulkar today got the 'Orange Cap' back from Paul Valthaty and is now the highest run-getter in the ongoing IPL. Cheered by daugher Sarah and son Arjun who were seen waving MI flags from stands, the legend hit a few crisp boundaries and again looked like making a substancial contribution.
But to their utter disappointment, the maestro scored only 28(24 balls, 4x4) before he was holed out in the deep by Steyn off Amit Mishra's bowling. Tendulkar charged out but failed to get to the pitch of a flighted delivery from Mishra as Steyn took a well judged catch at long-on. Tendulkar's dismissal triggered a collapse as MI from 70 for one slumped to 70 for four within a space of six deliveries.
