CIA tried to plant surveillance device atop Nandadevi - India

31 dec 2011

CIA tried to plant surveillance device atop Nandadevi

New Delhi, Jan 1 (PTI) Soon after China detonated its first atom bomb in 1964, CIA tried to plant a nuclear-powered surveillance device atop Nanda Devi to spy on the communist nation.

Though the secret mission failed and the device was lost there, it created ripples in the Indian establishment 12 years later.

The espionage mission remained top secret till April 1978 when a news report published in a US magazine "Outside" claimed that the US intelligence agency had sent a team to set up a remote sensing device atop 25,645-foot mountain in the Himalayas in 1965.

But bad weather halted them 2,000-feet short of the summit and forced them to abandon the 125-pound device containing plutonium 238 that can remain radioactive for about 500 years. When the team returned to the site a year later, the device could not be located.

After a short-term "feckless effort", the US government gave up its search for the device. Instead, the CIA covertly placed a second snap generator on another mountain, Nanda Kot, in 1967. After serving the agency''s purposes, it was also abandoned a year later, the report had claimed.

The revelations sparked a huge uproar in the country and even forced then Foreign Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to say the episode might damage the "recently improving" ties between the two countries, according to recently declassified External Affairs Ministry documents.

The documents, available with National Archives, show how the Indian embassies abroad, especially in the US, had become active and kept on sending notes explaining how the issue was being played up by the media there.

At the time of this discloser, Foreign Ministry officials here were apparently unaware of the fact that the Nanda Devi mission was actually a joint collaboration between India and the US, according to the declassified documents. .

Anuj Bidve, 23, was shot in the head at point-blank range as he walked with friends near their hotel in the inner-city Ordsall district of the city, in the early hours of December 26.
The murder of the Indian student is being treated by detectives at Greater Manchester Police (GMP) as a "hate crime" which may have been racially motivated.
Today senior officers from the force announced the cash reward and said they hoped it would help get the killer gunman caught as soon as possible.
Detective Chief Supt Mary Doyle, leading the murder inquiry, said: "It is an extremely unusual, savage and motiveless attack, an absolutely horrific crime, which is why we are taking the step of issuing it (the reward) a bit earlier than we normally would."
According to the Press Association, Police have not said whether investigators have so far met with a wall of silence from the local community in Ordsall, one of the most deprived inner-city districts of Greater Manchester.

New Delhi:  After the Rajya Sabha session ended sine die without a vote on the Lokpal Bill, Team Anna attacked the government on its failure to get the Lokpal bill passed in the saying it had showed that nobody can trust the UPA.

"We cannot trust this government. By the evening it was very clear that government was not ready to face vote. The trust deficit is huge today," activist Kiran Bedi said.

Team Anna had been calling the government draft of the Bill 'toothless' and Ms Bedi had said yesterday that  she would prefer non-passing of the bill as of now as it will save CBI from further dilution.

"I had appealed for 'save CBI' campaign. Non passing of Lokpal Bill as of now will at least save CBI from further dilution," she had said.

Anna's co-villagers head for Mumbai to fill MMRDA Ground

Not to let Anna down, the Hazare supporters from Ralegan headed for Mumbai in eight vehicles on Tuesday and were expected to join the protest on Wednesday

Mumbai/Ralegan Siddhi: As anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare's agitation saw an empty MMRDA ground, the Gandhian's supporters from his village Ralegan Siddhi have decided to fill up the venue in Mumbai as much as possible.

Not to let him down, the Hazare supporters from Ralegan headed for Mumbai in eight vehicles on Tuesday and were expected to join the protest on Wednesday.

The sarpanch of the village said, "Anna's health is deteriorating so around 200 people from the village are leaving for Mumbai. We will request Annaji to break his fast because the country needs him. We will ask him to fast when his health improves."

The first day of Anna Hazare's agitation was a disappointment for the anti-corruption brigade. The lack of Mumbaikars' support saw the MMRDA ground never quite full of protesters on Tuesday, which was a huge contrast to the massive gathering at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan in August this year.

Team Anna was expecting a crowd of over 1 lakh protestors, but the visitors' number on the first day was estimated between 4,000 and 10,000.

Mumbai terror :David Headley’s wife may help nail LeT founder Saeed- India

27 dec 2011

NEW DELHI: National Investigation Agency (NIA) will soon send a letters rogatory to Morocco for recording a statement of Pakistani-American terrorist David Headley's estranged Moroccan wife, Faiza Outalha, to get more evidence against him as well as LeT founder Hafeez Saeed.

The decision to send the documents was taken sometime back but NIA decision to send the judicial document to Morocco was taken sometime back and the probe agency was giving final touches before it approaching the special court for issuance of the request, official sources said on Tuesday.

The sources said Faiza Outalha, the estranged wife of Headley, could be of help in nailing the lies of Saeed, the Lashker-e-Taiba(LeT) boss who has been attempting to throw a veil to his terror activities under the garb of being associated with humantarian activities of Jamaat-ul-Dawa(JuD).

Outalha had met Saeed and complained about Headley to him and besides that she had also gone to the US Embassy in Islamabad to complain against the American-born terrorist and his role with terror groups like LeT and Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami, the sources said.

The statement was being recorded as a witness as of now, the sources said.

Outalha had been able to give security agencies an insight into the personal life of Headley which inlcuded connections he had in Mumbai, including with some socialites.

She was married to 50-year-old Headley in February 2007 but they were divorced a year later.

Hackers target US security think tank - India

Hackers target US security think tank

Dr Sanjay Kumar Cardiac Cardiothoracic Heart Surgeon India

London:  Hackers on Sunday claimed to have stolen 200 GB of e-mails and credit card data from United States security think tank Stratfor, promising a weeklong Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Members of the loose hacking movement known as "Anonymous" posted a link on Twitter to what it said was Stratfor's secret client list - including the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, Goldman Sachs and MF Global.

"Not so private and secret anymore?," the group taunted in a message on the microblogging site.

Anonymous said it was able to get credit details, in part, because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them - an easy-to-avoid blunder which - if true - would be a major embarrassment for any security company.

The group's claims could not immediately be verified, although Stratfor's website was down. A banner read "site is currently undergoing maintenance please come back soon."

Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" - a reference to Anonymous spinoff and fellow troublemakers Lulz Security - it also posted a link to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.

The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.

"They took money I did not have," he told The Associated Press in an email. "I think why me? I am not rich."

Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on companies such as Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, as well as others in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

PILs are weapon of mass instruction - India

24 dec 2011

'PILs are weapon of mass instruction'

The PIL has delivered social, economic and political justice to deprived sections. It's here to stay.

Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was a recognition and extension of the loosening of the strict rule of locus standi in the seventies to allow even a stranger to the proceedings to participate if he could demonstrate a substantial and genuine public interest. It reflects an evolution from the adversarial system to a new class of litigation. This power has now been extended successfully to exercise powers of the high courts in their jurisdiction under Article 226 to enforce, "legal and other rights" besides "fundamental rights".

In a vibrant democracy that India is, the Supreme Court by extensive interventions through PILs over the last three decades has achieved with remarkable success the fundamental objectives of first extending to people, particularly that class which remains deprived of means to seek justice; social, economic and political, and protected their human and fundamental rights. Second, maintaining strong but balanced checks and balances over the executive and the legislature in areas where they failed to enforce justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.

Examples of the exercise of this power show the panoramic scope of such jurisprudence including blood banks, interim relief for the Bhopal gas tragedy victims, pollution control, the framing of coastal zone regulations, noise pollution, child prostitution, human rights violations in Punjab among several others.

In a recent decision in State of Uttaranchal vs Balwant Singh Chaufal case, Justice Dalveer Bhandari speaking for the Supreme Court divided the development of PIL in three phases. Phase I dealt with the protection of fundamental rights under Article 21 of marginalised groups and sections of the society who because of extreme poverty, illiteracy and ignorance could not approach the courts. Phase II dealt with protection and preservation of the environment and the ecology, while Phase III deals with issuance of directions for maintenance of probity, transparency and integrity in governance. While Phase I and II appear to have achieved the first objective, Phase III is directed to secure the second objective.
Poverty, illiteracy and exploitation are widespread despite economic progress. The legal and political rights of millions remain on paper. The biggest challenge facing the nation is deficit in governance resulting in the concentration of material resources in the hands of a few. Emergence of Maoism is a clear indication of the failure of the system to deliver.

PIL is, therefore, a weapon which has to be used continuously but at the same time selectively as the provisions at times get abused by those with vested interests like political and business rivals, misguided social activists, ngos, disgruntled government employees and citizens. Consequently, this revolutionary idea at times becomes self-defeating. Courts are unable to see through such attempts. However, this cannot and ought not undermine the benefits of PILs. This variety of juriprudence is here to stay and flourish.

Actor Brad Pitt feels he is losing enthusiasm with age and that he felt more optimistic when he was younger.
"I was more optimistic and naive when I was younger and I arrived in Los Angeles with a few hundred dollars in my pocket and took any odd job I could find, then worked as an extra before I started to get acting jobs," contactmusic.com quoted the 47-year-old as saying.
"I gradually grew more cynical and realistic about the world, and in some ways I'm sorry I lost some of that openness and enthusiasm," he added.
However, the actor admits that being a father has helped him regain some of his youthful zest.
"Being a father and being part of my own family has rekindled a lot of that lost spirit although I still have a naggingly realistic outlook on things," says the actor, who raises six children with partner Angelina Jolie.

Oracle misfires in fiscal 2Q, raising tech worries - India

22  dec 2011

Oracle stumbled in its latest quarter as the business software maker struggled to close deals, a signal of possible trouble ahead for the technology sector.
The performance announced Tuesday covered a period of economic turbulence which has raised concerns that major companies and government agencies may curtail technology spending.
Oracle's results for the three months ending in November suggested the cutbacks have already started. Management reinforced that perception with a forecast calling for meager growth in the current quarter, which ends in February. The developments alarmed investors, causing Oracle Corp. shares to slide 10 percent.
In a telling sign of weakening demand, Oracle's sales of new software licenses edged up just 2 percent from the same time last year. Analysts had expected a double-digit gain in new software licenses. The company had predicted an increase of at least 6 percent and as much as 16 percent.
Wall Street focuses on this part of the business because selling new software products generates a stream of future revenue from maintenance and upgrades.
Oracle's software is a staple in companies and government agencies throughout the world. Its database products help companies store and manage information. Its line of applications automates a wide range of administrative tasks.
Part of the problem was that technology decision makers delayed signing contracts during the final few days of the quarter, according to Safra Catz, Oracle's chief financial officer. That could be an indication that companies and financially strapped government agencies are treading more carefully as Europe's debt problems threaten to hobble a still-fragile global economy.
"Clearly, this quarter was not what we thought it would be," Catz told analysts during a Tuesday conference call. She said the company is hoping some of the deals that were postponed in the last quarter will be completed within the next two months.
Oracle's weakest markets were in the U.S., Europe and Japan.
Things looked even bleaker in Oracle's computer hardware division, which the company has been trying to build since buying fallen Silicon Valley star Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion last year. Oracle's hardware revenue dropped 10 percent from the same time last year
Oracle earned $2.2 billion, or 43 cents per share, in its fiscal second quarter. That was a 17 percent increase from net income of $1.9 billion, or 37 cents per share at the same time last year.
If not for certain items, Oracle said it would have earned 54 cents per share. That figure fell below the average estimate of 57 cents per share among analysts polled by FactSet.
Revenue for the period edged up 2 percent from last year to $8.8 billion. Analysts, on average, had projected revenue of $9.2 billion.
In the current quarter, Oracle expects its adjusted earnings per share to range from 55 cents to 58 cents - below the average analyst estimate of 59 cents per share. Revenue is expected to rise by 2 percent to 5 percent from the same time in the previous year. If Oracle hits that top end of that target, it would translate to revenue of about $9.2 billion - below the analyst estimate of $9.4 billion, according to FactSet.
Oracle has expanded its sales force by about 1,700 people to fish for more customers during the second half of its fiscal year. About 111,000 employees worked at Oracle as of Nov. 30.
The company's shares shed $2.91 to hit $26.26 in extended trading after the second-quarter figures were released. The stock has been sagging since hitting $36.50 in May.
In an effort to bolster the stock, Oracle announced it will spend an additional $5 billion to buy back its shares. The company, which is based in Redwood Shores, Calif., didn't set a timetable to complete the stock purchases. Oracle spent about $1 billion buying 33 million shares in its most recent quarter.

Besides Headley and Saeed, the Home Ministry gave sanction to the National Investigation Agency to prosecute 26/11 attacks mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, Headley's accomplice and Pakistani-Canadian Tahawwur Rana and al-Qaeda operative Illyas Kashmiri, official sources said here. Sajid Malik, handler of Headley, and Abdul Rehman Hashmi will also be named in the chargesheet besides two officers Major Iqbal and Major Samir Ali, believed to be working for Pakistan's snooping agency, the sources said.
The sanction of prosecution against the nine was accorded after a legal opinion from the Law Ministry. They will be named in the chargesheet for waging war against the country under the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The NIA had registered a case against 50-year-old Headley and Rana on November 12, 2009 and later on added other names after investigation by central security agencies showed a large set of people were involved in terror activities against the country.
Both Headley and Rana are at present in custody of US authorities and NIA has only got limited access to Headley, who has entered into plea bargain arrangement with US authorities to escape a harsh sentence. 50-year-old Rana was found guilty by the US court of terror activities in Denmark but absolved of his role in the 26/11 strikes in Mumbai.
The NIA, while registering a case against Rana and Headley under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and for conspiring to wage war against the country, had alleged that Headley had visited India "several times before 26/11 and once after" the Mumbai terror strikes, which left 166 people dead.Barring Headley and Rana, NIA has secured an Interpol Red Corner Notice against all the seven accused including Saeed and Lakhvi, who is said to be in a Pakistani jail facing trial for conspiring the 26/11 attack.

Revival of Sikh extremism on foreign soil; MEA increases vigil

A senior government official told Headlines Today on condition of anonymity at the recently concluded G-20 summit in Cannes that the agencies perceived a security threat for the prime minister

New Delhi: The revival of Sikh extremism activities on foreign soil has put the government on the edge. Documents accessed by Headlines Today point to an alarming rise in the activities of hard line Sikh groups in Europe and North America.

The red flag has been raised following intelligence inputs and assessment sent by several Indian envoys to the foreign office recently. South Block has been told that Sikh extremists have been trying to revive the demand for Khalistan.

Former Jharkhand governor Ved Marwah, who earlier was the chief of Delhi Police, said, "Anyone who thought Sikh insurgency was over was mistaken. They have been given shelter by ISI in Pakistan. They are openly moving around in Pakistan. They are being funded by separatist organisations, plus they are getting support from political parties."

A senior government official told Headlines Today on condition of anonymity at the recently concluded G-20 summit in Cannes that the agencies perceived a security threat for the prime minister. The French government was alerted.

The Indian mission in Germany too has alerted the South Block. The hardliners had petitioned the German foreign office to intervene and prevent execution of Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar.

Bhullar has been on death row for 1993 terror attack and was extradited by Germany. He has become a rallying cause for these groups.

Sources said Pakistani spy agency ISI and other terror outfits were also trying to foment militancy in Punjab.

Samsung files new claims against Apple in Germany

South Korea's Samsung Electronics said on Monday that it has filed new legal claims against US rival Apple in Germany, claiming that the iPhone maker infringed four of its patents.

Samsung said the claims, filed on December 16 with the Mannheim regional court, relate to alleged infringement of patents including those for Samsung's telecommunications standard technology and user interface.

The two technology giants are engaged in a legal battle involving dozens of cases worldwide as they struggle for leadership in the hugely lucrative smartphone and tablet computer market.

Apple began the process in April, accusing Samsung of "slavishly" copying its iPhone and iPad designs. Samsung has focused its own lawsuits on technology patents rather than design.

The South Korean giant has received two legal boosts this month.

On December 9 Australia's High Court cleared the way for Samsung to sell its Galaxy 10.1 tablet in the country in time for Christmas, dismissing Apple's bid to have a ban extended.

Earlier in the month a federal court judge in San Jose, California, denied Apple's request for a preliminary injunction that would have banned the sale of three Samsung smartphones and a tablet computer in the US.

Pilgrims tackle plastic pile-up at Sabarimala

Chennai:  Almost all the pilgrims who go through the annual rituals of travelling to Sabarimala may have been stalled by the dam row this year. But for two city-based Ayyappa devotees, the plastic pile-up on Sabarimala is a more pressing issue.

They have embarked on a 2,500-kilometre long padayatra that covers five states and is scheduled to last 80 days, to draw attention to the issue.

The duo - T R Ananthapadmanaban (49) and C H Sriram (21) - began their journey at Kasi in Uttar Pradesh on October 21 and are expected to reach the Sabarimala Sannidhanam on January 12.

According to Ananthapadmanaban, the padayatra is meant to sensitise devotees on the ill-effects of the mounting pollution in Sabarimala, which happens particularly from the large volumes of plastic dumped in the hills.

"Tonnes of plastic littered in Sabarimala by devotees have become a threat to wildlife, as the animals consume these wastes," he said.

Ananthapadmanaban said he was using pictures of the plastic waste piled up at Sabarimala to urge devotees to use biodegradable materials. This, he said, would bring down the damage to the environment.

"We are also distributing pamphlets, which have information on the measures that need to be adopted by devotees in Sabarimala for controlling pollution," he added.

Sriram, who is also part of the mission, said they were meeting as many as 50 people every day during their walk. The duo resumed their walk to Sabarimala from Chennai on Sunday, as part of the itinerary after completing their journey in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

Srinivasan of Eco Pilgrimage Trust claimed that about 3.5 crore people visited the hill shrine last year.

2G case: Swamy deposes against Chidambaram

Appearing before a special CBI court here Saturday, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy deposed against Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram to prove his alleged complicity in the 2G spectrum scam.

Dr Sanjay Kumar Cardiac Cardiothoracic Heart Surgeon India
Swamy told Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special Judge O.P. Saini: "The prime minister's speech delivered on the floor of parliament in February clearly proves that the pricing of the spectrum was taken on basis of cabinet decisions of 2003, which specifically left the issue to be determined by the finance minister and DoT (Department of Telecom)."

Chidambaram was the finance minister in the first United Progressive Alliance (UPA-I) government when the saga 2G spectrum began.

Swamy has sought to make Chidambaram a party in the spectrum case, saying the decision on spectrum pricing was taken in 2008 jointly by him and then communications minister A. Raja , who is lodged in Tihar Jail since Feb 2.
"Chidambaram and Raja were empowered by the 2003 cabinet decision to determine the spectrum price jointly," said Swamy.

"Chidambaram was aware at least one day before what Raja was planning to do in selling the spectrum," he added.
As Swamy sought some time to bring more documents related to the scam, the court adjourned the matter till Jan 7, 2012.

Chidambaram responsible for attack on Ramdev: Lawyer assisting Supreme Court

New Delhi:  The amicus curiae appointed by the Supreme Court has found that Mr Chidambaram, as Home Minister, ordered the eviction of the yoga icon from his massive sit-in protest at Ramlila Maidan. Late at night, as thousands lay sleeping, the Delhi Police lashed out with batons to dispel the crowd, and to track down Baba Ramdev. He disappeared, and was found hours later, disguised as a woman, near the railway station. Rajeev Dhawan, who is the amicus curiae or senior lawyer assigned to assist the court, says that it was upon Mr Chidambaram’s advice that the police intervened.
Mr Dhawan also said that records, which include Mr Chidambaram’s interviews at the time show that the crackdown on  the camp had been planned by the government well in advance. The yoga teacher had been in negotiations with senior government ministers over how they should recover black money stashed abroad. The yoga guru  violated an assurance he had made to the government that he would not begin a hunger strike. Hours after he began his fast, supported by thousands of the followers who are customary at his camps, the police arrived.
Mr Dhawan quoted from documents including a press release from Mr Chidambaram’s office on June 8 that said, “A decision was taken that Baba Ramdev would not be allowed to organize any procession or to undertake any fast at the Ramlila Maidan ground. If he persisted in his efforts to do so, he will be directed to remove himself from Delhi.” Mr Dhawan says that, “This suggests that the decision was taken at the Home Minister’s  level, but suspended while talks with Ramdev were on… and when talks failed, the police enforced the decision.”
The case will next be heard on January 9.
The Supreme Court is studying the incident “suo-moto” – the judges said they decided to get involved based on media reports of the crackdown.
Mr Chidambaram has been accused by the BJP of misusing his office to have police cases dropped against a businessman who he once represented. The BJP also says that because Mr Chidambaram was Finance Minister in 2008, when the telecom or 2G scam played out, he should be penalised as co-creator of the swindle with A Raja, who was the Telecom Minister and is now in jail. The BJP says Mr Chidambaram endorsed the decisions taken by Mr Raja to execute a conspiracy to sell licenses and spectrum at inexplicably low rates to ineligible companies.

China's November FDI down nearly 10 percent

China's foreign direct investment (FDI) dropped by 9.76 percent year-on-year to $8.76 billion in November, the commerce ministry said Thursday.

In November, China approved the setting up of 2,718 foreign-invested companies, down 12.91 percent from a year earlier, Xinhua reported quoting ministry spokesman Shen Danyang.
The November figure brought the total FDI in the first 11 months to $103.77 billion, up 13.15 percent year-on-year.
During the same period, the nation approved the setting up of 25,086 foreign-invested companies, up 3.23 percent year-on-year, said Shen.

New giant plane to launch people, cargo into orbit - India

New giant plane to launch people, cargo into orbit

Dr Sanjay Kumar Cardiac Cardiothoracic Heart Surgeon India

Seattle:  Microsoft Corp. co-founder Paul Allen and aerospace pioneer Burt Rutan are building the world's biggest plane to help launch cargo and astronauts into space, in the latest of several ventures fuelled by technology tycoons clamouring to write America's next chapter in spaceflight.

Their plans, unveiled on Tuesday, call for a twin-fuselage aircraft with wings longer than a football field to carry a rocket high into the atmosphere and drop it, avoiding the need for a launch pad and the expense of additional rocket fuel.

Allen, who teamed up with Rutan in 2004 to send the first privately financed, manned spacecraft into space, said his new project would "keep America at the forefront of space exploration" and give a new generation of children something to dream about.

"We have plenty and many challenges ahead of us," he said at a news conference.

Allen and Rutan join a field crowded with Silicon Valley veterans who grew up on "Star Trek" and now want to fill a void created with the retirement of NASA's space shuttle. Several companies are competing to develop spacecraft to deliver cargo and astronauts to the International Space Station.
Allen bemoaned the fact that government-sponsored spaceflight is waning.

"When I was growing up, America's space program was the symbol of aspiration," he said. "For me, the fascination with space never ended. I never stopped dreaming what might be possible."

Allen and Rutan last collaborated on the experimental SpaceShipOne, which was launched in the air from a special aircraft. It became the first privately financed, manned spacecraft to dash into space in 2004 and later won the $10 million Ansari X Prize for accomplishing the feat twice in two weeks.

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic licensed the technology and is developing SpaceShipTwo to carry tourists to space.

The new plane will have a wingspan of 380 feet - the world's largest. The plane will carry under its belly a space capsule with its own booster rocket; it will blast into orbit after the plane climbs high into the atmosphere.

This method saves money by not using rocket fuel to get off the ground. Another older rocket company, Orbital Sciences Corp., uses this method for unmanned rockets to launch satellites.

The rockets will eventually carry people, but the first tests, scheduled for 2016, will be unmanned. It should be another five years before people can fly on the system that Allen and Rutan are calling Stratolaunch.

The company, to be based in Huntsville, Ala., bills its method of getting to space as "any orbit, any time." Rutan will build the carrier aircraft, which will use six 747 engines.

The spaceship and booster will be provided by another Internet tycoon, Elon Musk of PayPal, who has built a successful commercial rocket.

Allen left Microsoft in 1983. Since his time at the software giant he has pursued many varied interests. He's the owner of the Seattle Seahawks football team as well as the Portland Trailblazers of the NBA.

Why Ponting can't catch up with Tendulkar - India

Why Ponting can't catch up with Tendulkar

New Delhi: Indians are in Australia and while bygones may be bygones, a statistical look at the past is perhaps, an appropriate way to ascertain what how the two teams have fared since the infamous 'monkeygate' controversy.

The series in 2007-08 may have been decided 2-1 in favour of Australia but spirited fights from both sides made the series one to be remembered for. A sea of change since, however, has swept through both sides and while Australia have fumbled from one Test to another, India touched the pinnacle of Test success only to lose it all against England with a 0-4 whitewash.

India's two biggest margins of victory since 2008 have been an innings and 198 (against New Zealand in 2010) and an innings and 144 runs (against Sri Lanka in 2009). The two matches were played in Nagpur and Kanpur. While the sub-continent has always been the preferred bastion of the Indian players, their best outside was a 10-wicket win against New Zealand in Hamilton (2009).

Australia on the opposing end have won 21 of their 47 Tests, losing 16 and finishing the remaining 10 on level terms.

While many feel that India has the best possible chance of beating Australia in Australia this time around, speaking numerically, the 44.68 per cent winning record of Michael Clarke is slightly better than the 43.47 per cent record of MS Dhoni, since January 2008.

But then Clarke has led Australia in just 8 Tests against Dhoni's 34.

Talking of personal records, till India's last tour of Australia Ricky Ponting was known to be the only player who had the potential to score more Test tons than Sachin Tendulkar but going by the stats of these two players in the last three years, it doesn't look easy anymore. Sachin has played 38 Tests since February 2008 and scored 3401 runs with the help of 12 tons and 14 half-centuries. On the other hand, Ponting has played 44 Test and scored 2880 runs with the help of 5 tons and 19 tons. In total, Ponting has 39 Test tons in comparison to Sachin's 51.

Delhi turns 100, celebrations begin

Dr Sanjay Kumar Cardiac Cardiothoracic Heart Surgeon India

New Delhi:  Delhi, the political and cultural capital of several empires including the Mughals, today added yet another chapter to its glorious history as it marked 100 years of its re-emergence as modern India's capital.

Delhi was proclaimed as the capital of British Raj on December 12, 1911, shifting from Kolkata, by then Emperor of India George V thereby returning to the historic city its lost glory.

As it turned a century, the Delhi government and other cultural agencies like the Indian Council for Cultural Relations have lined up a series of celebrations to mark the occasion.

To begin with, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will release a book on the history of seven cities of Delhi which details the account of how the present city was constructed this evening. Special souvenirs will be released, and specially planned exhibitions showcase the rich and diverse heritage and culture of the city.

A photo exhibition on the city of monuments will be among a series of events that the government agencies have lined up to mark the centenary year.

'Dastann-e-Dilli' - an exhibition on the city, will be also inaugurated by Dikshit and Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna on Wednesday.

The exhibition will chronicle the culture of Delhi - right from its ancient days to the modern period - where both the heritage sites and modern-day buildings co-exist.

The year-long celebrations will actually kick off in January when the Ministry of Culture has lined up a number of events that will showcase the rich cultural heritage of the city.

Not to be left behind, Delhiites have already began celebrating the centenary year of their beloved city, thronging in large numbers to a food festival at Baba Kharag Singh Marg.

The 'Delhi Ke Pakwan Festival' brings the very soul of Delhi's culture, street food to the people with a variety of 'kebabs', 'kulfi' and other mouth-watering delicacies.

The foundation stone for the building of a new city in Delhi was laid by King George V and Queen Mary at the site of the Delhi Durbar at Kingsway Camp on December 15, 1911 and New Delhi, as it is called, came out of the architectural brilliance of Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker.

Delhi has traditionally been the seat of a series of empires and regimes that have ruled India since over 3,000 years back.

Each of the empire has left behind an indelible imprint on the heritage of Delhi, that has housed no less than eight cities over the centuries, and the 100 years of the latest city marks an opportunity to celebrate the continuity of this rich habitation.

Will fight for strong Lokpal (anti-corruption) - Anna

Dr Sanjay Kumar Cardiac Cardiothoracic Heart Surgeon India

New Delhi:  The sunny winter afternoon was as comfortable and equanimous as the debate on the Lokpal Bill that lasted nearly four hours at Jantar Mantar, where Anna Hazare held a day-long token fast, as he described it, against the government's intent to deliver a weak Lokpal Bill to combat corruption.

Point noted, said Anna when seeing off his guests. But he said in a short speech that while law-making is the prerogative of MPs, people are on stand-by to fill the streets and jails if they are "deceived with a weak Lokpak Bill."

Govt admits $9 billion mistake in export figures - India

Govt admits $9 billion mistake in export figures

New Delhi:  Fears about exports being shown on the higher side have come true with the government conceding today that it made a mistake as the numbers got inflated by US $9 billion in the April-November period of the current fiscal.

"Every damn number for the last eight months has been revised..." Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar said, conceding the crucial balance of trade deficit was also kept under-valued at US $107 billion instead of US $117 billion.

"There were not only mis-classifications but also error in double counting and all sorts of things due to problems in the computer software which was recently upgraded," he said.

Having admitted mistakes, Mr Khullar said that at least now "the notion that the government is deliberately cooking up and telling lies... has got to stop. How many people will come and tell you that we have goofed up; there was a mistake. I have said it openly there is nothing to hide; there is no shame in admitting that there is something wrong".

However, he said that even after factoring in mistakes, the exports grew by 33.2 per cent between April-November.

The data goof-up was 4-5 per cent of the export billing and on an average it was inflated by US $1 billion a month, Mr Khullar said.

There were doubts on huge growth in exports which was even shown at 82 per cent in July at a time when the manufacturing was going down.

"Exports are still doing pretty damn well. (Earlier) you thought it (growth) would be 40-45 per cent, now it is down to 33 per cent (during April-November this fiscal)," he said.

For the eight month period, total exports have been calculated at US $192.7 billion, while imports at US $309.5 billion (growth of 30.2 per cent).

The fiscal-end trade gap may be US $150-160 billion, he said.

CBI set to file chargesheet against Essar group - India

CBI set to file chargesheet against Essar group

Sources said the chargesheet may not name any government officials as accused as the CBI believes that it was a boardroom conspiracy allegedly hatched by Essar to float Loop Telecom as a front company to bag 2G licences

New Delhi: The CBI will soon file its chargesheet against the Essar group promoters in the 2G scam despite law minister Salman Khurshid's disagreement with attorney general Goolam Vahanvati, who approved the filing of the chargesheet.

Khurshid has been claiming that Vahanvati did not consult his ministry before taking the decision. The law ministry had given a clean chit to Essar on an application filed by it and said it did not commit any illegality.

A CBI official said Vahanvati's opinion was final as far as legality of the matter was concerned as he is the top government lawyer and the minister could not overrule him.

"If the law ministry takes up the matter with our ministry, then the matter could be delayed further. But we are almost prepared to file our chargesheet and there are no remaining legal hurdles," an official said.

Sources said the chargesheet may not name any government officials as accused as the CBI believes that it was a boardroom conspiracy allegedly hatched by Essar to float Loop Telecom as a front company to bag 2G licences. Essar was itself not qualified for licences due to its holding of 33 per cent stake in Vodaphone-Essar.

A CBI official said the chargesheet was prepared and at an advanced stage and the delay was because of their careful calibration of its every aspect. He said it could be filed in a court in a couple of weeks.

The chargesheet could be filed against the accused for cheating and criminal conspiracy. The matter had reached the AG after the CBI's prosecution wing shot down the investigating officials' case against Essar and said it at best amounted to a civil offence.

Essar group has been insisting that they have been in agreement with telecom guidelines. It had taken opinions of several retired judges and leading lawyers in its favour.

Harvard University removes courses taught by Subramanian Swamy

Dr Sanjay Kumar Cardiac Cardiothoracic Heart Surgeon India

New Delhi:  The Harvard University has dropped courses taught by Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy because of a controversial article he wrote this summer that was deemed to be offensive to Muslims. After Mr Swamy's article was published in an Indian newspaper, a group of Harvard students had urged the University to cancel the courses that he teaches every summer at the university.

In October, an FIR was filed against Mr Swamy for his article. He was charged with Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code for spreading enmity between communities.

Mr Swamy is one of the main petitioners in the Supreme Court for the telecom scam, also referred to as "the 2G scam" after the sort of spectrum involved. Mr Swamy believes the case against him is a manifestation of political vendetta. "I wrote the article in July, the FIR is filed in October," he had said. "The motive seems to be for my stand on 2G."

Mr Swamy had urged the Supreme Court to monitor the investigation into the 2G scam, which is being conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Mr Swamy has recently asked the court to direct the CBI to investigate the alleged role of P Chidambaram, currently the Home Minister, in the scam. When the telecom scam unfolded in 2008, Mr Chidambaram was Finance Minister.

Buzz is that Riteish Deshmukh's friends in Bollywood are planning a grand bachelor party for him.
In films, he's one harrowed bachelor, always getting into some kind of trouble, but this time it's different for Riteish Deshmukh. Buzz is that a bachelor party is in the offing for the actor, who's all set to tie the knot with long-time girlfriend, actress Genelia D'Souza soon. Sources say that Riteish's friends are planning a huge bachelor party for the actor before he gets hitched on February 4 next year.
"We are planning a party for Riteish and let me tell you, all his friends will be there. We are yet to zero in on how and where we are going to throw the party, but it's definitely on," says an actor friend of Riteish.
Filmmaker Sajid Khan, who's one of Riteish's closest friends, didn't deny that something's being planned for his actor buddy.
"We want everybody who's been close to Riteish to be there. Shah Rukh (Khan), Arjun (Rampal), Hrithik (Roshan), Akshay (Kumar), Abhishek (Bachchan) will all be there at his bachelor party. We want everybody to be there," says a friend.
The party will be a hush-hush one. In all probability, it will be held at one of their friend's places. It is learnt that Gauri Khan may host the party, but nothing is confirmed as yet.

America's recent grads, now sought in India

America's recent grads, now sought in India

NYT
Dr Sanjay Kumar Cardiac Cardiothoracic Heart Surgeon India

New York:  Born and raised in Minneapolis, Win Bennet traveled extensively with his parents growing up, part of a family that enjoyed exploring different cultures.

When he graduated from Brown University with a major in economics and international relations in 2009, the American job market was less than welcoming, to say the least - so he looked to India.

"India is a natural choice for a few reasons," said Mr. Bennet, 24, who studied urban planning in Bangalore in his junior year. "The Indian overseas diaspora is a very vibrant and welcoming community." Also, he said, Indian professional networks with the West are large, deep and growing. "It was easy to explore opportunities and find a niche that fit my passion and skill set," just by talking to family friends and acquaintances, he said.

Mr. Bennet landed a job as an analyst at ICICI, India's largest private bank, and has lived in Mumbai for the past three years.

With the economy at home showing no signs of improving, an increasing number of recent graduates from the United States are job-hunting in India. Eager for the talent, Indian companies have responded by setting up recruiting programs overseas. While the pay in India is usually much lower than a graduate would earn in America, a lower cost of living can mean a better quality of life. "The chance to travel the world and live in a colorful Asian democracy far outweighs salary considerations when you have just graduated," Mr. Bennet.

Kunal Bahl, the co-founder of Snapdeal, an Indian e-commerce company, recently returned from a recruiting trip to the United States with stops at Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern and Stanford. "We don't have a very old legacy of Internet technology in India, and for a company that is as fast-growing as us the talent pool quickly dries up," said Mr. Bahl, 29, an engineer with a business degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

When Snapdeal's team spread the word that they were planning a U.S. recruiting trip, they were surprised by the response: more than 2,000 resumes, 30 percent of them from people who were not of Indian descent. For many non-Indians, Mr. Bahl said, "It's not that they are not getting jobs there, but they are not getting the jobs they want." So young American graduates "would rather come to India with all the resources available and get to do exciting things," he said. He plans to return in the spring for another recruiting drive.

Indians who have lived abroad for some time are also aggressively looking for work back home. "We do get a lot of C.V.'s from people abroad, especially Indians looking to come back to India," says Hitesh Oberoi, chief executive of Naukri.com, a leading Indian job site. "The number of Indians going abroad to study has increased significantly in the last few years, and they are potentially a great talent pool for companies here, especially start-ups," he said.

Snapdeal is not alone in looking for fresh talent overseas; Mahindra & Mahindra is recruiting at the Wharton School at Penn along with Barclays and Royal Bank of Scotland. At job fairs held in New Jersey and California recently, Indian companies included FlipKart, InfoTech Enterprises, Jindal Steel & Power and Tata Motors.

"In the recent past, a lot of Indians who have been living and working abroad have shown an interest in moving back to the country," said Mekin Maheshwari, president of engineering at FlipKart, of the decision to participate in the job fair.

Universities have also noticed the trend. Rajiv Dewan, a senior associate dean at the Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester, said that about 20 percent of the school's 400 graduates were now taking jobs in Asia, up from less than 10 percent five years ago. Of the nearly 40 Indians in the class, about 10 have taken jobs back home, where in the past only a handful would have done so, he said.

"In the past, if people come back they would be considered a failure," Mr. Dewan said during a recent visit to India. "Now, when people come back they feel that this is the best start for them."

      • After having played the lead actor for more than five decades and acting in over 110 motion pictures, Dev Anand continues to be the link connecting the Black and White era of filmmaking to the Eastman colour and the 3D era that is settling in. He was of the cornerstones of the film industry and his age didn’t really stop him from working on his first love, cinema.
The Government of India honoured Dev Anand with the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002 for his contribution to Indian cinema. In a career spanning over five decades, he has received three Filmfare Awards and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991.

    • Dev Anand, the “evergreen star” is a successful director and producer as well. He directed 19 films and produced 31 films in his glorious career. He wrote the story for 13 of his films.

    • He got his first big break from Ashok Kumar. He picked him as the hero for the Bombay Talkies production, Ziddi (1948), co-starring Kamini Kaushal. The movie was a raging success and it prompted Dev Anand to start producing films.

    • So in 1949, he turned producer and launched his own production company Navketan (meaning newness). It has produced over 31 films and continues to produce movies even today.

Dev Anand’s first film as an actor was the 1946 film Hum Ek Hain. The film also saw him share screen space with the legendary Guru Dutt. It was on the sets of this film that he and Guru Dutt became friends.
They had a unique understanding between themselves that if one of the two becomes successful first in film industry then they would help the other to be successful so if Dev Anand produced a film, Guru Dutt would direct it and when Guru Dutt directed a film, Dev Anand would act in it.

  • Dev Anand embodied an undying spirit and reaffirms the saying that age is just a number. “Dreams should never die. When the dreams are dead, you are dead,” the actor had famously said.

The evergreen actor Dev Anand was born on September 26th, 1923, in Shakargarh Tehsil of Gurudaspur district (now in Narowal District, Pakistan) in undivided Punjab. While Dev Anand’s mother was a pious, loving and deeply religious lady, his father was a leading lawyer of Gurdaspur, who wanted to give first grade education to all his children.
His father had a command over Persian and Arabic languages and at times he used to recite from the Islamic scriptures and explained the meaning to illiterate Muslims. At other times he used to narrate chaste Urdu poetry.Dev Anand is the second of three brothers who were in Hindi Cinema. His brothers are Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand.
Their sister, Sheel Kanta Kapur, is the mother of renowned Hindi and English film director Shekhar Kapur. He graduated in English Literature from the Government College, Lahore, (now in Pakistan).
After graduation, he left his hometown and came to Mumbai in the early 1940′s.
He began his career in the military censor office at Churchgate, Mumbai, for a salary of Rs 200.
Later, he joined his older brother Chetan as a member of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA).
In the late forties Dev Anand started getting offers to star opposite singer-actress Suraiya in woman oriented films, as the male lead. Although Dev had tasted success in the films he starred in with Suraiya, the producers and directors attributed the success of these films to the acting prowess and screen presence of Suraiya.
Suraiya was always first billed star in credits implying that she was a bigger star than Dev Anand and he considered himself lucky to get a chance to star with an established actress and accepted the offers. The two of them were paired in six films together — Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shair (1949), Afsar (1950), Nili (1950), Do Sitare (1951) and Sanam (1951), which were all successful at the box office and it was while shooting for them that the duo fell in love.
The relationship was affirmed during the shooting of the song Kinare Kinare Chale Jayenge from the film Vidya, where during the shoot, a boat capsized and Dev Anand ended up saving his ladylove Suraiya from drowning. The clandestine affair was aided by their friends Durga Khote and Kamini Kaushal, who went out of their way to engineer secret rendezvous between the two.
On the sets of the film Jeet, Dev Anand finally proposed to Suraiya and gave her a diamond ring worth Rs 3,000.
But as luck would have it, her maternal grandmother opposed the relationship as they were Muslim and Dev Anand Hindu, and so, Suraiya remained unmarried all her life. Dev was directed by Guru Dutt in the crime thriller, Baazi (1951). The film starred Dev Anand, Geeta Bali and Kalpana Kartik and became a cult classic, a trendsetter of urban crime films that followed in Bollywood in the 1950s.
Mona Singh was given the screen name of Kalpana Kartik by Dev Anand’s eldest brother Chetan Anand.
Her pairing with Dev was a big success at the box office and they were offered many films together. They signed all the offers and starred in Aandhiyan (1952), Taxi Driver (1954), House No. 44 (1954), and Nau Do Gyarah (1957), all of which went on to become big hits.
During the making of Taxi Driver, the couple fell in love and Dev proposed marriage to Kalpana. They married in a secret ceremony in 1954 and the couple have two children —a son, Suneil and a daughter Devina.
After her marriage, Kalpana Kartik decided not to pursue her acting career.Dev Anand starred opposite the then newcomer Waheeda Rehman in C.I.D. (1956), Solva Saal (1958), Kala Bazar (1960) and Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962) and the unforgettable Guide (1965) besides others.
Apart from his pairing with Suraiya and Kalpana Kartik, his pair with Nutan and Waheeda Rehman was popular among the audiences in late 50′s and 60′s. His films Rahee and Aandhiyaan, were screened along with Raj Guide was his first film in colour and was based on the R. K. Narayan’s novel of the same name.
Dev Anand was instrumental in making the film version of the book as he met and persuaded Narayan to give his assent to the project. The film was directed by younger brother Vijay Anand and was a runaway success at the Box Office. Dev Anand played the role of Raju, a verbose guide, who supports Rosy (Waheeda) in her bid for freedom while grappling with his emotions in his passage through love, shame and salvation. But while being supportive, he is not above exploiting her for personal gains.
Combining style with substance, he gave an telling performance, which is still remembered as one of his best.
The novel story alongwith SD Burman’s haunting music made it one of the masterpieces of Indian cinema.
Later, a 120-minute US version of the film was made with additional directing and writing, which was produced by Tad Danielewski. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007, about 42 years after its release. He reunited with Vijay Anand for the movie Jewel Thief, based on thriller genre which featured Vaijayantimala, Tanuja, Anju Mahendru, Faryal and Helen. Their next collaboration, Johny Mera Naam (1970), again a thriller was the highest grossing Bollywood film of 1970.
In the film, Dev was paired opposite Hema Malini was a big hit. The movie also made Hema Malini a big star.In the sixties, he acquired romantic image with films like Manzil and Tere Ghar Ke Samne with Nutan, Kinare Kinare with Meena Kumari, Maya with Mala Sinha , Asli-Naqli with Sadhana Shivdasani, Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai and Mahal with Asha Parekh and Teen Deviyaan opposite three heroines Kalpana, Simi Garewal and Nanda.Dev Anand like a few around him developed his unique and inimitable style that set him apart from his contemporaries.
Be it his rapid-fire style of dialogue delivery or a penchant for nodding while speaking, Dev Anand’s style got cult status with films like House No 44, Pocket Maar, Munimji, Funtoosh, C.I.D. and Paying Guest. He specialised in mystery, comedy and love story genre of films and his style was lapped up by the audience and was widely imitated.
His directorial debut, the espionage drama film Prem Pujaari, was a disaster at the Box Office but has developed a cult following over the years. However, he tasted success with his 1971 film, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, which talked about the rampant hippie culture. His find Zeenat Aman, who played the mini-skirt sporting, pot-smoking Janice, became an overnight sensation.
Dev Anand, since then, became known as a filmmaker of trenchantly topical themes. That year, he starred with Mumtaz in Tere Mere Sapne, an adaptation of A. J. Cronin’s novel, The Citadel. The film was directed by Dev’s brother, Vijay and was also successful. The year 2007 saw Dev Anand’s autobiography, Romancing with Life. The book is considered as his tell-all tale about his life, especially since he admitted to his relationship with Suraiya. The book also spilled the beans about his many muses over the years, one of which was Zeenat Aman. The actor, who admits to falling in love with the young actress, detailed about their relationship in his autobiography.
“Whenever and wherever she was talked about glowingly, I loved it. And whenever and wherever I was discussed in the same vein, she was jubilant. In the subconscious, we had become emotionally attached to each other.
“After the premiere of Ishq Ishq Ishq at Metro cinema, Raj Kapoor kissed Zeenat in full view of the invited audience, congratulating her for her sparkling performance in the film. That must have made her evening all the more sparkling. Again I felt proud of her, as much as I admired Raj Kapoor for his honest and spontaneous reaction.
