Washington: China is estimated to have a stockpile of over 3,000 nuclear warheads, a latest research report has revealed. The estimate is several times more than what international arms control experts believed China to possess.
The report, compiled by a university student, claims that China has built a vast network of secret underground tunnels to hide its sophisticated missiles and nuclear arsenal.
So far it was believed that China possessed just around 80 to 400 nuclear warheads. The report says the Chinese Second Artillery Corps, designated to handle nuclear weapons, has dug thousands of miles of tunnels across the country.
The report was prepared using satellite images, Google Earth, blogs and military journals. The American policymakers were not taking the report lightly. It has set the alarm bells in Pentagon and started a Congressional hearing.
